WHAT IS IT?
Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) is a program in which the Sunday scripture readings are proclaimed and explained on a level appropriate to children in grades K – 5. Any child in this age group may participate – no registration is necessary.
WHEN IS IT?
CLOW is currently offered during the 10:30am Sunday Mass at Pope John XXIII.
WHAT DO THEY DO?
Following the Opening Prayer, the priest invites children to gather with their leaders in front of the altar. They are sent forth to a nearby classroom for an age-appropriate reflection on the Word. This experience of liturgy parallels what is happening in the assembly they just left.
The scripture lessons are shared by the leader through stories, discussions, pictures, activities – whatever the leader finds most appropriate to convey the meaning of the day’s scriptures.
When concluded, the children return to their families – usually at the time of the Presentation of the Gifts.
WHY CLOW?
By helping our young children understand the Liturgy of the Word in engaging and age appropriate ways, CLOW prepares them to continue listening and responding to God’s word in liturgy as they grow and mature in the faith.
